SOUR IN THE GLASS – ALKALINE IN THE BODY • WHAT’S BEHIND KOMBUCHA’S BENEFITS?
You’ve probably heard the term "acid-base balance" before. But what does it actually mean, and what does it have to do with kombucha?
A healthy acid-base balance in the body is essential for many bodily functions, from digestion to cell health. The pH level is the measurement that reflects this balance. Each organ has its own optimal pH level, and the body usually does an excellent job of regulating the acid-base balance on its own.
However, an unhealthy lifestyle – including an unbalanced diet rich in processed foods, sugar, low-quality animal products, nicotine, and alcohol – can disrupt this balance and put stress on the body. The consequences often include fatigue, digestive problems, and inflammation.
Kombucha and the Acid-Base Balance
During the fermentation of kombucha, acetic acid and lactic acid are produced. While the word "acid" might sound negative at first, these organic acids can actually have beneficial effects on the body. Acetic acid has antibacterial properties and can help reduce harmful microorganisms in the gut. Lactic acid, on the other hand, promotes the growth of healthy gut bacteria, improving digestion and optimizing nutrient absorption.
The probiotic bacteria in kombucha can further support a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn helps strengthen the immune system.
(It’s worth noting that most of the health benefits attributed to kombucha have not yet been confirmed through clinical studies. So far, they are based on positive anecdotal experiences.)
Of course, a healthy gut microbiome cannot be built through a single food alone. To support an alkaline-favoring diet and lifestyle, it’s essential to include plenty of vegetables, fruits, adequate hydration, regular exercise, restful sleep, and healthy breathing habits. All these factors work together to maintain balance in the body and promote overall well-being. This holistic approach is an integral part of my nutritional counseling.
